Excellence in music

Follow the national curriculum, and go well beyond it.

The Académie Musicale de Liesse follows the national curriculum (socle commun), which sets out in detail what students must know and be able to do.

It prepares its students for the state examinations, the Diplôme National du Brevet and the Baccalauréat Général.

That freedom lets teachers go well beyond the syllabus, choose their own materials and methods, and so give a genuine academic education.

01 Adapted timetable

Combining studies and music

To offer a balanced, high-quality education alongside a complete artistic programme, we use a demanding method that lets us do more, and better, in less time:

  • Small classes — some fifteen students per class on average.
  • Teachers chosen for their passion for their subject and their gift for teaching. Beyond their respective qualifications (CAPES, agrégations, doctorate…) and their experience, all are committed to innovative, flexible teaching that helps each student succeed. They support, encourage and challenge each student, and step in when needed, to help him reach his full potential.
  • Differentiated teaching: since we welcome boys only, our teachers adapt learning to their psychology and to their specific needs.
  • A timetable suited to children’s natural rhythms: academic lessons take place in the morning or early afternoon, when minds are sharpest. The end of the afternoon is reserved for music, sport and study.
  • Regular sport, which makes lessons and study time more productive.

02 Tutoring

Supporting each student’s progress and independence

5 essential elements of our teaching approach:

  • Motivation through music, its love and its joy: to keep pursuing his passion, a student is ready to push himself in his studies and overcome difficulties in any subject.
  • Individualised tutoring in studies: each student is followed by a designated tutor, who reviews his progress with him regularly — daily or weekly, depending on how independently he works. The tutor supports the student in every aspect of his life at the Academy, in close collaboration with the parents and the other teachers and educators. He helps the student set goals that match his ambitions, and to reach or adjust them.
  • The personalised timetable: to fit in all his academic and musical studies, the student has a personalised timetable according to his artistic choices. The tutor and the educator responsible for the student’s group help the boy to keep to his timetable.
  • Very regular assessments : boys' academic and musical progress is assessed regularly, in every year group.
    • Oral and written tests.
    • Weekly in-class tests from 6e to Terminale.
    • Termly mock examinations (formal examinations: mock baccalauréat papers), written and oral.
  • The class council: at the Academy, the educational, academic and musical project is first of all the student’s. He takes ownership of it and reviews it with the educational team once a term, which makes the progress review a key moment. Whatever his age, the student leads his own review, prepares it with his tutor and educator, and attends it. It is a moment of truth for looking back on the past term and setting goals for the next.
  • Commendations and encouragements are awarded in each area to reward excellent behaviour and excellent work, both academic and musical (and, if needed, a warning to rekindle a student’s enthusiasm!). An Excellence Prize goes to any student who receives commendations in all three areas of life at the Academy.

03 Openness

General culture and openness of mind

Our Masterclasses, whether musical or of general culture, aim to give the students a genuine humanist culture and an open mind, through a range of topics that complement the national curriculum.

They also help students learn about careers and think about their choices after the baccalauréat.

We welcome high-quality speakers who present their profession or their passion, or explore a particular topic with our students to broaden their culture, as well as higher-education institutions that come to present themselves.

Since the founding of the Academy, we have covered law, philosophy, economics, Greek, literature, submarine hydrodynamics, fluid mechanics and the Magnus effect, the papacy and the Vatican…

We have also worked on the art of public speaking, self-knowledge…

We have welcomed business leaders, engineers who told us about careers in industry, and the director of studies of the Blomet classes préparatoires, who came to explain the CPGE system.

At our concerts and on our tours, there is always time for culture: wherever we go, we take time to discover the local heritage.
